Delphi
Delphi is a picturesque small town, approximately three- hour drive from the airport of
Athens. Its history is as old as Greece itself. According to myth, Zeus (the father of
Gods) released two eagles, one from east and one from the west, and at the point they
met, he threw the Sacred Stone, marking the center of the earth- the navel of the
world.
Delphi, nestling in the feet of Mount Parnassos, became renowned in antiquity and in
the modern world for its famous sanctuary of Apollo, god of light and music and
patron of medicine as well as for the cult of god Dionyssos, patron of the theatre. In
ancient times, people flocked from all over the known world to receive the oracles of
Pythia and participate in the Pythian Games. As an athletic event these games were
second in importance (after the great Olympic Games) yet first in the Panhellenic
Contests for music and poetry.
During the Pythian Games a truce was declared among warring factions to facilitate
the participation of the artists, athletes, spectators and pilgrims. This truce offered to
rival city- states an opportunity for peace while competing in the athletic track and in
the field of the arts.
The temple of Apollo and the archaeological museum of Delphi are today one of the
most renown sites in the world.
